Double Grids and LiDAR Flight Planning

How double grids or crosshatch flight patterns affect your LiDAR Data

Many people who provide LiDAR services come from a photogrammetry background. Some of the principles from photogrammetry carry over great to LiDAR. However, some don't.

Your goal in collection LiDAR data should be to collect the BEST points, not the MOST points.

If you want good penetration of vegetation, go lower and slower. You don't need to fly the same area with two perpendicular grids.

Double grids are great in most photogrammetry workflows. In LiDAR, you almost never need to do a double grid. In most cases you're just adding to the "fuzz" that Rock Surveyor has to work through.

In short, one grid is enough!
