How to Check for Corrupted Data
A trajectory processing error in ROCK Desktop can be caused by corrupted data being recorded during LiDAR data collection. This workflow details how to determine if your data is corrupt.
Overview
A very small IMU file (e.g., 1 KB) often indicates:
- Data corruption during write-to-USB
- Improper stop procedure
- Outdated firmware
- USB drive formatting or compatibility problems
Your goal is to confirm data transfer integrity, validate hardware/software state, and ensure correct field workflow was followed.
1. Inspect the POS Folder
Expected files for R3 Pro / ULTRA systems:
- IMU.IMR
- IMU.INS
- GNSS.GPB
A healthy dataset shows all three files close in size (ULTRA may have slightly larger INS files).
If one file is only ~1 KB, treat this as a likely corruption event.
2. Verify Full USB Transfer
Before assuming field failure:
- Ensure the USB drive was fully copied
- Recopy the dataset if needed
- Confirm no interruptions occurred during transfer
Premature USB removal is one of the most common causes of missing POS data.
3. Verify Firmware Was Up to Date
ROCK Desktop will display a firmware warning if the LiDAR unit was outdated during data capture.
Follow:
- Current Firmware Versions
- Updating ROCK LiDAR Firmware
Firmware mismatches can cause unstable IMU/GNSS logging.
4. Validate the USB Drive
Confirm the USB drive used meets official requirements:
- Use the original included drive or
- Use a drive approved in the KB
Check:
- Was the USB drive recently formatted?
- Was it near capacity?
- Was it formatted following the correct guide?
Old or improperly formatted USB drives are a frequent source of IMU file corruption.
5. Confirm Proper Stop Procedure Was Followed
Two workflows exist:
If flying with ROCK Pilot:
Ensure the pilot tapped Stop Capture before powering down.
If using the one-button method:
Confirm the operator executed:
- Press 1 second → release
- Press & hold ~5 seconds
- Wait for blinking green → solid green
- Only then power off
Stopping capture too early interrupts IMU and GNSS writes, producing tiny IMU files.
6. When to Escalate
If the IMU file remains corrupted after all checks:
- Document POS folder file sizes
- Confirm firmware + USB formatting history
- Note the stop-capture method used
- Email: support@rockrobotic.com
ROCK may request:
- The full dataset
- The device serial number
- Logs from ROCK Desktop
Quick Workflow (OL)
- Open POS folder and compare file sizes.
- Recopy the dataset from the USB.
- Confirm LiDAR firmware was current during the flight.
- Validate the USB drive model & recent formatting.
- Verify stop-capture workflow with pilot/crew.
- If still unresolved, send dataset details to support (support@rockrobotic.com).
